Deacon Robert Leon Muray's Obituary
With heartfelt reverence, we reflect upon the life of Robert Leon Muray Jr., whose heavenly sunrise began on December 30, 2023. Born into this world on July 20, 1944, in Jackson, Michigan, to the late Robert and Susie Murray, he carried forward their legacy with grace and dignity.
Robert's academic achievements were very important to him, and they began with his graduation from Jackson High School in 1962, followed by a distinguished tenure in the Air Force. Upon his honorable discharge, he formed a lifelong partnership with Bettie J. Lyons, a union that was blessed with over five decades of love and companionship. Their family blossomed with the birth of three daughters: Robyne, Tamara, and Andrea. The lineage continued with his cherished grandchildren Jasmine (Brandon), Demajae (Lauren), Nazir, and great-grandson Isaiah, with the joyful expectancy of another. Embracing the extended family, Robert was also a guiding light to his Godson Anthony Collins.
Robert's pursuit of knowledge led to degrees from Jackson Community College and Eastern Michigan University. His passion for education translated into a 34-year career, where he imparted wisdom through business courses at various educational levels and shared his love for basketball as a coach.
An entrepreneurial spirit was evident from his youth, legend has it that his early venture as an “independent contractor” started at age seven with his “Ice Cream Cart. His business ventures spanned tax preparation, property management, and apparel companies: Suit of the Month Club, G&G Gear and Black Heritage. Finally, with the Blue Dolphin Paddle Boats standing as his “Crown Jewel” supporting to his desire to give young people a chance to work.
Robert's spiritual journey was deep and personal. In 2019 he felt he had a calling to work with the Pastor and Deacons. He was serious and dedicated to this purpose. His strong faith in God kept him going through sickness. His commitment to his church was a reflection of his unwavering faith, particularly cherished was his participation in the Lord's Supper, guided by his favorite scripture, Matthew 21:22.
He was preceded in death by his siblings Phyllis (Doris) Smith, Edwina Upchurch, and Willie (Donald) Murray. Robert's memory will be forever held in the hearts of those who survive him, including his sister, Sandra Young; Uncle Gilford Johnson; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A celebration of Robert's life will take place on January 12th, at Second Missionary Baptist Church, located at 304 E. Prospect, Jackson, Michigan 49203. The Family Hour will begin at 10:00 am, with Funeral Services to follow at 11:00 am, Pastor Darius Williams presiding.
In remembrance of Robert Leon Muray Jr., we honor a life rich in faith, family, and community—a devoted educator, entrepreneur, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and patriarch.
