Deacon Melvin Lindsey's Obituary
Obituary:
Melvin Lindsey was born March 5, 1938 to Roxie Mae Lindsey in Memphis Tennessee.
The Lad:
He was raised by his grandmother. He received his early education in the Memphis Public School System.
Mike says: One of Uncle Melvin’s childhood memories was plowing out in the cotton field with a donkey, horse or mule. He doesn’t remember how they did it, but he seemed to always end up plowing next to a school during recess where they would be playing baseball. He remembers one day letting go of that animal and joining the kids to play a game. When he finished playing, the animal had gone across the field alone, tearing up crops in its pathway. “I don’t know how I didn’t get in trouble for that…but I had fun, he said… I loved baseball.”
He often voiced his displeasure of why all the other kids went to school while he was making a living with his family. This instilled in him a strong respect of earning a responsible living.
The Brother:
Melvin, the eldest child of Roxie with such a cool demeanor gave his younger siblings something to pay attention to. His suave nature to command the attention of the ladies was intensely admired by his younger brothers.
Dessaline (Slick) and Gloria (Chicken) recalls Melvin being a financial advisor. Gloria refers to him as a rock and he was always consistent, calm, and loving. After Slick’s passing, Melvin became even more of a brother to Gloria. He was present to lean on and receive wise counsel regarding her sons. Melvin continued to show his brotherly love while covering the family in prayer.
Toni recalls Bertha and Slick’s famous argument at Betty Sue’s funeral where the bickering caused Melvin to yell EVERYBODY JUST SHUT! UP! (he never did that) which was followed by an awkward period of extended silence that put you in mind of when someone says ‘let’s have a brief moment of silence for…’ Toni says she left the scene immediately.
Moments in time where William recalls the Winnebago that Melvin allowed Ike to drive and then wrecked in Rock Island, IL - Melvin did not even get upset. These were always exciting and fun-filled times with laughter.
The Father & Grandfather:
Dwayne, Zona and Marvin were his pride, joy and love. Being a proud father and grandfather was the highlight of his life. A generous provider he was for his children. During Zona’s illness, he cared for her just like a father would, never complaining. Always a supporter of being your best when faced with life’s adversities, he encouraged his children to reach beyond their highest potential.
The Uncle:
UNCLE MELVIN - the ‘rich’ uncle you bragged about to your friends and even each other.
As, Pooh recalls she was ‘fussed out’ (that time Grandma Roxie took a fall down a few stairs - ending up in a human pretzel) but then followed up with an apology and some money - LOL. Attiya reckons his love language was gifts (money) and we all concur.
Aaron recalls: The ‘God’ discussion came about when Uncle Melvin accepted Christ as a promise to Slick and Aaron asked, what took you so long to do it…Uncle Melvin says – women.
The Bowler:
Melvin was an avid bowler who has left his mark on the sport of bowling. During his bowling career he received 7 perfect score 300 and many 299, 298 and 297’s bowling rings. His love for the sport afforded him the opportunity of being a member of several leagues over the years. He is certainly loved and respected for his bowling athletic ability across the US.
The Fisherman:
His signature cast through patience, being attentive and knowing when to pull the line from the tug below set him apart from the novice fisherman. He could stay out on that water from sunup to sundown. Ice-fishing was a yearly event for him and his buddies. He would talk about catching the walleyed bass and that mean ole dirty catfish…well I declare.
The Deacon:
Melvin was baptized on April 2, 2006 at Greater Philadelphia COGIC by Superintendent Dexter Hurt. Melvin was ordained as a Deacon of the Oasis of Love Full Gospel Church by his Pastor and friend, Elder Tom C. Pryor. His love for God and His people was evident in the service he gave to the church he loved and to all others. Melvin cherished his communication with God as he prayed for others and in the way he offered worship. Full of love and compassion, he fulfilled his Godly assignment on Monday, August 9, 2021.
