Josephine Thornton was born December 31, 1940 to Lucille Mays and Reginald Thornton in Port Gibson, Claiborne County, Mississippi. Josephine moved with her family to Jackson, Michigan in 1944. Educated in the Jackson Public School System she attended Allen Elementary, East Intermediate and Jackson High School. As a youth she attended Second Baptist Church. She became a mother to three loving children, Raycele, Robert and Robyn. Josephine later became employed with W. A. Foote Memorial Hospital (now known as Henry Ford Allegiance Health), and began an illustrious career lasting 42 years in the dietary department. In the mid 70’s while employed at the hospital, a co-worker encouraged her to attend Second Baptist. Williams and later under Pastor Darius Williams, she dutifully served on the Sr. Usher Board, Deaconess Board, Missionary Society, Sunday School & BTU (where she loved teaching her students, helping them get to know the Lord), Supervisor of Junior Ushers, Kitchen Committee, and Pastor’s Aide Club. She served the Jackson Community through Church Women United, AARP, Quest Lions Club. She also enjoyed being a part of the Chain Lake Missionary Baptist District Association. On Tuesday, April 13, 2021, Sister Thornton heard the Master’s voice and entered into eternal rest. She was proceeded in by her parents and brother; James Thornton.
